Intensity – Color – Rhythm – Heat

Experience the rich history of Latin American choral music, sampling works from the Renaissance to today, from culture to culture.

Your journey will take you from Brazil to Argentina, Mexico to Venezuela, and back to Puerto Rico, hearing the intense flavors and colors of these traditions through sound. True Concord voices will be spiced with an infectious rhythmic pulse, enhanced by percussion, guitar and piano.

The centerpiece of the program is Villa-Lobos’s Bachianas Brasileiras no. 5, featuring acclaimed soprano Corinne Winters. This work reflects the cellist-composer’s Brazilian heritage and his life-long admiration for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

With an intimate pairing of guitar and soprano (originally written for eight cellos), the composer creates an expansive, soaring and haunting melody, with the voice rising ecstatically over a rain forest wall of sound.

Humid air – The rhythm of rain – Song of exotic birds
– The breath of the forest –
All resulting in the composer’s most indelible work.

“My music is natural, like a waterfall.”

-Heitor Villa-Lobos
